At the end of 2016, there were 87 coffee shops in this guide. At the end of this year -- good riddance, 2017 -- it's up to 90. Coffee shop openings have definitely slowed down, and there were a handful of closures :( but overall I didn't really get out as much as I would have liked to check out all the new shops on the Westside, in Koreatown and down towards Whittier, La Brea, and Long Beach. Next year!

First update of 2017! Hello!
I haven't gotten to as many new coffee shops as I would have liked to, especially in Long Beach and Ktown, but hopefully I'll get some time to check them out before the next update. For the time being, I've added the new shops and deleted the ones that have closed [:(] and reorganized the neighborhood groupings a bit, especially where some places (ahem, Highland Park) are looking like they probably should have their own page. Also, hey, I started an Instagram account [@lacoffeela] that will be just coffee-related stuff -- follow along if you'd like.
At the end of 2016, there were 87 shops here. With this update's additions and deletions, we're at 94.

The last coffee I had this year was the above: G&B Coffee's New Year's Eve special Toffee Nut Latte, with bits of toffee and a packet of Sudden Coffee and served with a little carafe of warmed, slightly frothy almond-macadamia milk. You rip open the coffee, then add the milk and ta da: instant toffee latte. It was terrific.
Around this time of the year last year, I had 71 coffee shops here on Coffee LA; with this year finally -- finally -- coming to a close, the guide now has 87. Here's to hoping good things, coffee-related and otherwise, for 2017.

A little more than halfway through 2016 — it's not too late for an update, right? The site now lists 80 solid places for coffee around L.A. Also took care of some housekeeping things site-wide, just to clean things up and to remove references to restaurants and coffee shops that have long closed. The big changes:
Added: The Fika Company in Redondo Beach, a rather interesting and really good roaster
Added: Blue Bottle opened yet another L.A. shop, this one in the Hayden Tract
Added: Folks who remember BrewWell and its terrific Koreatown shop will be very happy to learn that it's relocated -- it's a walk-up window in Hollywood now.
Added: Demitasse has a new Hollywood shop, this one with a full kitchen, wine and beer
Added: Cognoscenti Coffee in South Park
Silver Lake + Environs
Added: Counter Culture Coffee's Training Center
Added: Twenty40, the new cafe from the folks at McCall's Meat and Fish Co.
Added: Kindness & Mischief in Highland Park
Added: Cafe de Leche's second location in Altadena
Added: Regent Specialty Coffee Bar in San Gabriel
Edited: Taza in Arcadia has moved; it's now across the street from its original spot, in the Mercedes-Benz dealership
Removed: Makai Coffee, which recently changed ownership and is now Deja Brew (which I haven't been to. The Long Beach page is woefully inadequate, I know — I don't get down there as often as I'd like.)
